Something Called 'facebook'

Year: 2009

"Do you know? The latest trend on the internet is something called facebook. Have you joined it? It is amazing," my friend told me. I was curious and decided to check out the website. I joined it and the rest is history. Things have never quite been the same since then.

Year: 2012

'facebook' hardly needs an introduction. It is currently the most popular social networking website on the internet. Every Ram, Rahul and Rahim is on facebook. We are all hooked to the website and not a day is spent without logging in to 'check for updates'. Our parents and relatives are out there too. Will you accept their friend requests or face the music for being secretive? The choice is yours..

facebook helps you connect with the people in your life. But it doesn't end there. There are a lot of ways in which people use facebook, also lovingly referred to as fb or FB:
  • finding old friends and acquaintances, staying in touch with them and making new friends
  • keeping friends updated about the latest happenings in their lives- right from waking up in the morning, eating, travelling, going to sleep, to important ones like getting engaged or joining a new job
  • liking or commenting on friends' updates
  • expanding professional networks (many people prefer Linkedin though)
  • promoting websites or blogs using ads and/or by creating 'pages' and posting content regularly
  • joining communities and groups which they find relevant, fun and interesting
  • playing games- farmville, cityville, petville, mafia wars and what not
  • just randomly browsing and exploring the website when they have nothing else to do
  • creating and taking silly quizzes- from simple ones like 'know your personality' to bizarre ones like 'how will you die?'
  • creating and voting in polls - like 'what is your favourite TV show?' and ' which city do you like the most?'
facebook has revolutionized the world as we know it. Don't you agree?

What is your facebook story?

@Irfanuddin: I agree with you..fb is a good way to stay connected, but users should be careful about the information they reveal online and safeguard their privacy.

@Ash: I read your post..it was great :) And i agree with your point that fb has turned us all into narcissists! All the bragging that our friends do , does tend to be irritating sometimes...
